Youth crossing for help

John had a good family and everything he needed, before he nearly snorted it all away. The North Vancouver teen grew up healthy and wealthy with loving parents. He played sports and excelled at piano and guitar. He got decent grades in school and loved snowboarding. But John is easily distracted. He has an attention-deficit disorder, which steers him toward activities he finds more interesting. At age 15, he started smoking marijuana every day. “It was easier to fit into that group of people and leave school,” he said. “It progressed from there. I got into ecstasy, went to parties. I got kicked out of three schools for using.” The downward spiral continued. READ MORE >>

THE PROJECT • Addiction affects families across BC: of all youth who experiment with drugs, one in ten will go on to become addicted, beginning a destructive cycle that damages young people, their families, and the community.

The Crossing at Keremeos will be the first long-term residential treatment centre in BC for boys and girls, between the ages of 14 and 18, who are challenged by addiction. Research shows that long-term care offers the best opportunity for successful recovery. This 42-bed centre for young people aged 14 – 18 is scheduled to welcome the first group of youth this January, 2009, with full occupancy scheduled for summer, 2009.

THE LOCATION • Central City Foundation is providing The Crossing, a 58-acre property, to be used for the long term residential treatment centre and has led a successful fundraising campaign to complete the initial renovation and retrofit of existing buildings, and in some cases, for new construction. But, there will still be a need for improvements and you can still be a part of this unique and wonderful place! READ MORE >>

HOW YOU CAN HELP • The Ministry of Health will contribute $2.4 million annually to cover the operational costs of this program, which includes support for Canada’s finest wrap-around services for participants and their families. CCF will provide the land. However, another $6 million is urgently needed to renovate and retrofit existing buildings, and in some cases, for new construction. We at Central City are leading the capital campaign to raise these funds. DONATE NOW >>
