Central City Foundation donors helped fund the Pavilion that was honoured with a hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ name.

The Britannia Carving Pavilion that Central City Foundation donors helped fund has a new name, šxʷqʷeləwən ct. Listen here for pronunciation.

The name is from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (Halkomelem) language, which loosely translated means “one heart, one mind and feelings.” The name was given to the pavilion during a ceremony where elders, knowledge keepers and supporters such as Central City Foundation joined together to honour the new space.

Central City Foundation invests in Indigenous cultural initiatives that bring together community and opportunity for youth to connect with their ancestry.

We were early funders of the carving pavilion, which stands in the heart of Grandview Woodland – a neighbourhood with the third largest Indigenous population in Canada.

Our involvement in the project is a continuation of our donors’ commitment implement the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the future of Indigenous youth through culture and community.

Britannia Carving Pavilion has a new Indigenous name

“Central City Foundation really helped make sure that it was a building that could really meet the needs of a community,” said Cynthia Low. “It was really the generosity of organizations like Central City Foundation that made this happen.

Don Fiddler, then district principal of Aboriginal Education at the Vancouver School Board said he hopes the space will also be used for artists living in the Grandview-Woodland area.

“We hope to recreate some of our Indigenous experiences, to one day have a canoe that will be developed here, as well as some welcome poles, totem poles, carving of masks and other small pieces too,” said Fiddler, “We also want to allow the Indigenous artists in this neighbourhood to come and make use of it so it becomes a community drop in place as well.”
